Dr. Amita Mahendru

Consultant Obstetrician and Subspecialist in Fetal and Maternal Medicine

Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust

Biography

I am a Consultant in Obstetrics and a subspecialist in Fetal and Maternal Medicine at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust now for the past 10 years and work closely with a passionate fetal medicine team to deliver high quality evidence-based care in complex pregnancies.

I qualified in 2000 from medical school in India and completed my postgraduate training in Obstetrics and Gynecology in 2004 before moving to the UK. I completed the specialist training in obstetrics and Gynecology in the UK followed by subspecialist training in fetal and maternal medicine and have been a member of royal college of obstetrician and gynecologist since 2005. I am very soon going to become a fellow of the Royal college of obstetricians and gynecologist in April 2026.

With a strong commitment to Fetal and Maternal Medicine, I led a groundbreaking prospective cohort study at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge, exploring the relationship between the ovulation-implantation interval, pre-pregnancy maternal cardiovascular parameters, and pregnancy outcomes such as recurrent miscarriages, preeclampsia, and intrauterine growth restriction. For this innovative work, I have been awarded an MD by the University of East Anglia, Norwich, in 2013. My research has been widely published in leading medical journals, and I have presented at numerous national and international conferences, earning recognition as a well-published and highly respected expert in my field and continue to contribute to ongoing research in this area.

I have received several awards, including the Best Poster Prize at the Fetal Growth International Conference in Birmingham and Best short oral presentation award in Early pregnancy category in the International society of ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology (ISUOG) Los Angeles. I have been sought-after speaker and authority in fetal medicine.

As a passionate educator, I am the current Subspecialty Training supervisor for Fetal and Maternal Medicine at Nottingham and the Regional Ultrasound Training Coordinator for the East Midlands and faculty at the delivery of obstetric ultrasound courses for the Obstetric curriculum in the University of Derby. I have been one of the obstetric faculty members in the DREEM team to provide stimulation training to emergency medicine doctors in maternal emergencies and have travelled with the team to deliver simulation training in maternal emergencies to AbuDhabi and Austria.
