Course Overview

Sepsis remains one of the leading causes of avoidable death in children worldwide. Because its early presentation often mimics completely benign childhood illnesses, early identification requires an incredibly high index of clinical suspicion. The Paediatric Sepsis module delivers a comprehensive, time-critical blueprint designed to help you catch sepsis early, screen effectively, and initiate rapid, aggressive resuscitation.

Why This Course Matters

This training focuses on the recognition and management of time-critical sepsis, where delays in targeted treatment can rapidly lead to organ dysfunction, irreversible septic shock, and death. Participants will learn how to defeat subtle presentations by identifying the often non-specific and easily overlooked early signs of sepsis before cardiovascular collapse occurs. The course also provides a comprehensive understanding of the Sepsis Six framework, enabling clinicians to standardise their immediate diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, improve treatment efficiency, and significantly enhance patient outcomes through timely, evidence-based care.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

Crucial for all healthcare workers operating in settings where an acutely unwell child might present:

  • Medical & Acute Care Staff: Medical Students, Junior Doctors, and Emergency/Intensive Care Physicians.
  • Nursing Personnel: Paediatric Ward Nurses, Emergency Department Nurses, High-Dependency Staff, and Community Nurses.
  • First Responders: Paramedics and Emergency Care Practitioners acting as the first line of defence.
  • Community Health Teams: Health Visitors, School Nurses, Healthcare Assistants, and Support Workers.
  • Training & Governance Leads: Clinical Educators, Safeguarding Leads, and Emergency Care Team Leaders.

COURSE FORMAT

  • Flexible E-Learning: Self-paced remote learning augmented by interactive clinical cases and guided expert explanations.
  • Face-to-Face Teaching: Classroom-based immersive workshops featuring facilitated discussions, real-world case applications, and clinician-led teaching.

KEY FEATURES

  • Multi-system Symptom Matrix: In-depth study of subtle septic indicators across vital organs, covering core temperature swings, unexplained tachycardia, prolonged capillary refill, mottled skin, altered consciousness, and reduced urine output.
  • Sepsis Screening Mechanics: Practical training in applying validated paediatric sepsis screening tools, checking lactate levels, and running rapid blood cultures.
  • Aggressive Resuscitation Execution: Mastery of immediate management goals: high-flow oxygen, rapid fluid resuscitation, urgent empirical antibiotics, and blood glucose control.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

By completing this module, you will be able to:

  • Identify subtle, non-specific signs of early systemic infection and paediatric sepsis.
  • Apply objective sepsis screening tools and the structured ABCDE assessment framework.
  • Execute immediate, time-critical therapeutic interventions (intravenous fluids, antibiotics) and secure intensive care support.

WHAT MAKES THIS COURSE DIFFERENT

Sepsis care is a race against time. This course strips away unnecessary delays by replacing passive observation with an aggressive, highly structured approach to screening and intervention.
