Dr. Anju Menon

EM Consultant with PEM subspeciality

Sherwood Hospital Trusts

Biography

I am a highly motivated Emergency Physician with over 15 years of clinical experience across the UK and India, with a specialist interest in Paediatric Emergency Medicine.I currently work a substantive consultant in Sherwood Hospital Trusts. I was awarded the Gold Medal for best performance in the FRCEM examination in 2023 and hold an MSc in Paediatric Emergency Medicine from the University of Edinburgh.

My clinical training has included senior roles across emergency medicine, paediatric emergency medicine, anaesthesia, intensive care, and acute medicine in major tertiary centres including Queen’s Medical Centre, Nottingham. Working in both India and the NHS has given me valuable insight into different healthcare systems. I developed resilience, adaptability, and strong clinical intuition in resource-limited environments, while in the NHS I refined my multidisciplinary approach, governance awareness, and structured leadership skills.

I have a strong interest in quality improvement and patient safety. I currently serve as Deputy Chair for the RCEM Time-Critical Medication QIP and as an Abstract Reviewer for RCEM conferences. My “Get It On Time” Parkinson’s medication project was awarded Best QI Project of the Year at Royal Derby Hospital and shortlisted for the Parkinson’s UK Excellence Award. I am also a Study Advisory Group member for NCEPOD (2025). Education and faculty development are central to my professional identity. I designed and now direct the Maternal Emergencies Simulation Course, which has trained over 180 clinicians and secured sustained HEE funding. The course has been run as a pre-conference workshop for EUSEM 2025.

Earlier in my training, I identified a gap in regional anaesthesia skills within the Emergency Department and developed a regional course that has now been running successfully for over 8 years. I am an active RCEM Examiner, EPALS instructor, ATLS instructor trainee, and European Trauma course instructor candidate and a faculty member on multiple regional and national programmes. I am passionate about leadership and building positive team cultures. I have served as Conference Lead for the NEPTUNE Paediatric Trauma Conference in Nottingham, APEM RCEM Representative, ACCS Trainee Representative for the East Midlands Deanery, and EUSEM workshop course director (2025). I am a GMC-approved Educational Supervisor and have completed formal leadership training including the Edward Jenner Programme and East Midlands Leadership Programme. As a member of Civility Saves Lives, I actively promote respectful communication, psychological safety, and supportive working environments. I have been involved in structured recruitment processes for international doctors and medical students at Nottingham and Lincoln Universities, which has strengthened my understanding of fair assessment and workforce development. Academically, I remain engaged through journal club leadership, abstract reviewing, publications including RCEM Learning resources, and ongoing conference participation. Overall, I bring a solution-focused, collaborative, and patient-centred approach to clinical leadership. I am committed to advancing paediatric emergency care through education, governance, multidisciplinary teamwork, and sustainable quality improvement initiatives that enhance both patient safety and staff wellbeing.
