Course Overview

Ultrasound Guided Cannulation Course is a practical clinical skills workshop delivered by REACT Pathways, designed to help healthcare professionals develop the ability to perform ultrasound-guided peripheral vascular access in patients with difficult intravenous access.  Using ultrasound significantly improves first-pass success rates in challenging cannulation cases while reducing patient discomfort, complications and delays in treatment.  This course equips clinicians with the practical skills to identify vessels and safely insert cannulas under ultrasound guidance, supported by hands-on training in a supervised, interactive learning environment.

Why This Course Matters

Difficult intravenous access is common in emergency and acute care settings and can delay treatment and increase patient discomfort.  Ultrasound-guided vascular access enables clinicians to:
  • Improve first-pass cannulation success
  • Reduce patient discomfort
  • Minimise complications
  • Improve clinical workflow efficiency
  • Reduce delays in urgent treatment
This course provides clinicians with the skills and confidence to apply point-of-care ultrasound effectively in vascular access procedures.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

  • Doctors working in emergency or acute care
  • Nurses performing vascular access procedures
  • Advanced Clinical Practitioners
  • Paramedics and pre-hospital clinicians
  • Allied Health Professionals involved in acute care

COURSE FORMAT

This course is delivered as a half-day practical workshop, with participants attending either a morning or afternoon session. Training includes:

  • Theory refresher
  • Ultrasound equipment demonstration
  • Hands-on practical training
  • Supervised procedural practice
  • Faculty feedback and assessment

Small group teaching ensures a high level of practical experience and individual support.
