Course Overview

Delirium is a acute medical emergency that frequently goes unrecognized in inpatient settings. The Delirium Assessment and Management course provides a structured framework for identifying, deconstructing, and managing acute cognitive disturbances. You will explore the distinct physiological presentations of hyperactive, hypoactive, and mixed delirium subtypes, while gaining the clinical reasoning needed to separate delirium from dementia, primary psychiatric conditions, and other altered mental states.

Why This Course Matters

Hypoactive delirium is often missed, leaving vulnerable, quietly confused patients at high risk for prolonged hospital stays, cognitive decline, and increased mortality. Spotting underlying triggers—such as silent infections, polypharmacy, and metabolic shifts—allows you to intervene early and resolve acute confusion safely.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

Invaluable for any healthcare professional looking after older adults or medically unwell inpatients:

  • Medical students and junior doctors rotating through geriatric or acute medicine
  • Nurses, nursing associates, and advanced clinical practitioners
  • Emergency medicine, acute care, and hospitalist clinicians
  • Community-based healthcare professionals managing transitioning care

COURSE FORMAT

  • Flexible E-learning: Self-paced remote learning with interactive cases and guided explanations.
  • Face-to-Face Teaching: Classroom-based workshops with facilitated discussion, case application, and clinician-led teaching.

KEY FEATURES

  • Structured Cognitive Toolkits: Master validated screening tools, cognitive evaluations, and collateral history-taking methods.
  • Non-Pharmacological Strategies: Learn evidence-based environmental adjustments and specialised communication techniques to de-escalate patient distress.
  • Safe Pharmacological Stewardship: Understand the limited, safe indications for pharmacological intervention, prioritising patient safety and minimising physical restraints.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • By the end of this course, you will be able to:
  • Differentiate between hyperactive, hypoactive, and mixed delirium presentations.
  • Identify and systematically reverse environmental and metabolic delirium triggers.
  • Design and execute customised, patient-centred care plans that minimise restraint and optimise cognitive recovery.

WHAT MAKES THIS COURSE DIFFERENT

Rather than relying on chemical sedation as a first resort, this module highlights non-pharmacological care and environmental optimisation. It equips you with the skills to address the root medical causes of cognitive distress while protecting the patient's dignity.
